TOMS produces their shoes in Ethiopia and China. This is called ‘clever marketing’. Is the aid really useful though? Not so much. They’re giving poverty stricken kids shoes to live in the same conditions that birthed them. There are other ways to get cheap shoes on poor feet instead of using some marketing scheme to ‘raise awareness’. They’re trying to make you feel better about being a consumer, they’re trying to get you to buy back some of that primitive goodness you lose every time you go out and buy something. They need vaccines and education, and for that same amount of money everyone is so readily using to buy TOMS, many more ‘charitable’ things could be done. TOMS isn’t doing anything, you’re buying the shoes, TOMS is just profiting on your willingness to be a ‘good consumer’. 

But like we always say “it’s better than nothing”, right? But for how long?

my mom was mentioning this to me when i first bought my toms..i just didn’t want to accept the truth.

Toms are made of paper and polyester. In other words they’re cheap!

So you’re all saying, if you lived in a shitty village with no power or food or shoes in a harsh environment, you wouldn’t accept the shoes from them? I’d feel pretty fucking good if someone gave me a new pair of shoes and I was walking around on rocks and sticks everyday. People are only pissed about this because yes, there is more important things, but imagine being one of those kids getting a pair of shoes so your feet don’t hurt and you don’t step on sharp things. If you’re so upset, do something better than what Toms is, I got 5$ on it that you won’t. ALSO. If you notice the bottom part of the shoe, it’s better made for their feet and has a thicker base.

I’m going to agree with Alex on this. When you buy these shoes it’s because you were probably already planning on buying shoes in the first place. At least that’s what I did. I didn’t go out of my way to spend money on useless things to make myself feel better. If this isn’t good enough for you then fly your own fucking plane over there and give them shots yourself. Sitting here bashing an organization is literally doing nothing for you besides making you look like an asshole.

Have Heart played a benefit show at a high school in africa. these kids have such little music influence or influence from anything outside of the town they live in. they were told to be respectful and stay in their seats as the musicians performed. but by the end you can see them getting into the raw energy of music. an amazing video.
